MBA students gain a well-rounded perspective of hydro-electric projects in Patagonia

During their January 2012 visit to Argentina and Chile, MBA students from the University of Iowa’s Tippie School of Management had the opportunity to hear from both sides of one of the world’s most controversial energy projects — the $7 billion USD HidroAysen dam project in Chilean Patagonia. Ricardo Alvial, a former World Bank advisor and the Chief Investment and Risk Officer at Enersis, discussed the economics and scope of the HidroAysen project with the Tippie School MBA students at Enersis’ corporate headquarters in Santiago, Chile. Prior to Mr. Alvial’s presentation, students were briefed by Juan Pablo Orrego, President of the Environmental NGO Ecosistemas and a chief collaborator with Patagonia Sin Represas, a HidroAysen opposition consortium, on the expected environmental impact of the project.
